THE VILLAGE ASSOCIATION WORKS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE VILLAGE COMMUNITY

All those who consider themselves to belong to Karttu are considered to be Karttu residents, including those who live by Kolmostie. This is how the matter was defined when the village activities were started. There are about fifty permanent residents in the village of Karttu, and three times as many summer residents. There are over a hundred holiday homes. Most of the shores of Karttu are zoned. There are no livestock in the village, but the fields are cultivated and grass fodder and cereals are grown on them. Efforts are made to keep the cultural landscapes, i.e. open fields, economic centers, shores and roads, well-maintained and prevent them from becoming overgrown.

There have been documented village activities in Karttu for a long time. After the First World War, working societies raised funds to obtain a stone pier. The completed project was a firefighting equipment shed on the side of the village road and later an electric light to guide people coming home to Hallianranta. After the last wars, the Karttu club fulfilled the villagers' need for socializing, until in the 60s, as the population increased, a large enough cottage could no longer be found for gatherings. Village activities revived in 1985. The village society (Kyläseura) was registered in 2000.

The first significant project of the village was a land exchange, which resulted in a common swimming beach in front of the sandbank owned by the municipality of Mämmiäinen, and later, with the proceeds from the village register, a dance floor was built there.

The village association has organized, among other things, summer parties, village clubs, end-of-summer celebrations, hiking or other trips, street cleaning, scrap collections, ice-fishing competitions, masquerades and theatre trips. There are also quieter periods in village activities, but we believe that if necessary, we can get the whole village rowing in the same direction again.

Village book and village newspaper

Karttu's village book Karttu was published in 2006. The village book contains the necessary information about the location of the village on the map, the history of the village, nature, people, the joys and burdens of life. Karttu village has been lucky enough to be in the middle of events, within hearing and sight, but at the same time on the sidelines. 

The village newspaper Kylälehti, published annually, tells about current issues and projects, introduces new residents of Karttu, and remembers those who have passed away during the year.

Both the village book and the village newspaper are still on sale and can be inquired about from the Village Association board members.
