Addresses, road and street names

A comprehensive address system helps rescue services in emergencies, for example. The address must be clear so that guests, ambulances or mail can find their way.

An address consists of a street or road name, an address number and, if necessary, letters. In urban areas, street and road names are decided in connection with the town planning. The town plan also provides address numbers for building sites, green areas and other objects requiring an address.

Road names in sparsely populated areas are decided separately. The principle is that a road can be given a name when there are several objects along the road that require an address (residential or holiday buildings, commercial or industrial buildings, boat launch sites, playgrounds).

In urban areas, consecutive address numbering is used, with odd address numbers on the left side of the street or road and even address numbers on the right side.

Address numbering in sparsely populated areas is based on the distance of the access road leading to the property from the starting point of the road. The last number is omitted from the distance in meters, so 100 meters from the starting point of the road gets address number 10. Odd numbers are on the left side of the road and even numbers are on the right side.

The city erects nameplates on all streets and roads that follow the address system and is responsible for the maintenance of the nameplates.

It is the property owner's responsibility to obtain and install an address number plate at their own expense so that it is legible from the street and road. The property owner must replace the number plate if the old plate becomes damaged or is no longer legible.

The address number plate of a building in the immediate vicinity of a road must be attached to the wall of the building.

When the building is not in the immediate vicinity of a street or road, the address number plate must be placed in a visible place at the beginning of the driveway leading to the property, on a mailbox, gate, fence or post.
