Composting notice

Remember to submit a composting notification if you compost food biowaste.

If you compost food biowaste generated at home in a composter, submit a statutory composting notification to the waste management authority. The notification must be submitted no later than two months after the start of composting.

If you only compost garden waste or toilet waste, you do not need to submit a notification.

The notification obligation applies to all properties, including holiday homes, in the municipalities within the jurisdiction of the regional waste management board. The jurisdiction includes Hämeenkyrö, Ikaalinen, Juupajoki, Kangasala, Lempäälä, Mänttä-Vilppula, Nokia, Orivesi, Parkano, Pirkkala, Pälkäne, Ruovesi, Sastamala (for the former Mouhijärvi and Suodenniemi), Tampere, Vesilahti, Virrat and Ylöjärvi.

A composter requires maintenance and must meet waste management regulations.

The composter is required to meet waste management regulations. The composter must be closed, solidly constructed and well ventilated and must not leak into the soil. The composter must also be protected from rats and pests, and must not have gaps larger than 7 mm. In addition, the composter must be spacious enough to accommodate biowaste even in the winter, when composting slows down.

A composter requires care to ensure that the biowaste has the right conditions to decompose into soil. Compost soil must be used as a soil improver in your own yard and must not be placed in public green areas or forests, or placed in a mixed waste container.

The composter must not cause littering or harm health, the environment or neighbors.

Notifications are processed in the order they are received, and information about the composting of biowaste is entered in the statutory register maintained by the waste management authority. The composting notification is valid for five years, after which it must be renewed.
