Air protection
Air is the most efficient means of transporting pollutants. Through the air, pollutants spread to areas close to the emission source and are transported long-distance around the globe. Air protection aims to reduce the release of harmful substances into the air.
Climate change is the most serious environmental threat of our time, caused by the increase in concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The effects of climate change are already visible: the climate is warming, sea levels are rising and glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate. According to forecasts, droughts will increase in arid regions, and extreme weather events will intensify all over the world: increasingly powerful hurricanes, floods, heavy rains and heat waves are expected. Many plant and animal species are at risk of extinction because they do not have time to adapt to the changing climate.
Climate change is not only an environmental threat, it also has security implications: the number of climate refugees is increasing as farmland is destroyed or drought prevents farming. The fight for clean water is also intensifying.
It is impossible to completely stop climate change based on current knowledge. Many greenhouse gases produced by human activity remain in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. They warm the climate, even if new emissions were stopped immediately. In Ikaalinen, CO2 concentration is monitored mathematically using CO2 reporting. In Pirkanmaa, in addition to Ikaalinen, Tampere, Pirkkala, Ylöjärvi, Kangasala, Hämeenkyrö, Sastamala and Punkalaidun are participating.

The carbon footprint of cottages consists of transportation, energy consumption, services and goods, and boating. The characteristics, equipment level, and cottage-housing practices of Finnish cottages vary, so there is also great variation between the carbon footprints of individual cottages.

Noise suppression
The general goal of noise abatement is a healthy and pleasant living environment free from noise nuisance. Citizens should also be able to enjoy silence and listen to the sounds of nature.
Section 60 of the Environmental Protection Act deals with the obligation to report noise. A written notification must be made to the municipal environmental protection authority of any activity causing temporary noise or vibration. Various guideline values have been given for noise levels, which must be followed in the operation.
A monitoring study was conducted on the noise situation in Ikaalinen in 1997. Based on the study, there is no particular noise nuisance in Ikaalinen that would require extensive noise abatement. Temporary nuisance may occur to settlements in the area affected by the busiest streets and especially to disturbed sites. Noise nuisance caused by industry is limited to a small area.
Pirkanmaa's greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 10 percent from 2022
Emissions calculation data is openly available to everyone: hiilineutraalisuomi.syke.fi.
Emissions data Ikaalinen
Ikaalinen emissions excluding industry decreased by 3 percent from 2023 to 2024. Preliminary data shows a similar decrease in 2025.
