Presidential election 2024

According to Section 54 of the Constitution of Finland, the President of the Republic is elected by the Finnish people in direct elections from among natural-born Finnish citizens for a term of six years. The same person may be elected President for a maximum of two consecutive terms.

The president is elected in a direct, two-stage election if necessary. Election day is the fourth Sunday in January of the election year. If one of the candidates receives more than half of the votes cast (i.e. accepted) in this (first) election, he or she will be elected president. If this does not happen, a second election will be held two weeks later on Sunday between the two candidates who received the most votes in the first election. The candidate who received the most votes in the second election will be elected president.

If only one candidate is nominated, he or she shall be elected without an election. The President shall take office on the first day of the month following his or her election.

The election day for the presidential election is Sunday, January 28, 2024, and the election day for a possible second election is Sunday, February 11, 2024.

  • The Government states that one candidate has received more than half of the votes cast and has been elected President.
