Ikaalinen Old Market Square

The independent township of Ikaalinen was founded on 21 April 1858. Ikaalinen was once described as the oldest, smallest and most beautiful township in Finland. The Old Town Hall is a strong part of the identity of Ikaalinen and is a solid cornerstone in the future development of Ikaalinen.

Eldest
According to the opening words of the proclamation issued by Grand Duke Alexander II of Finland on April 21, 1858, “In a suitable place in the Ikaalisten Kirkonkylä, the necessary underground land shall be purchased for the crown for the establishment of a smaller township.” The non-independent township established in Ikaalisten was the first in Finland.

Least
The Turk farm, which was separated into a market area, had 65 residents (in 1859). The town plan drawn by G.Th. Chiewitz in 1858 also covered only 28 barrel areas (12,8 ha). In the last market year of 1971, the population had risen to 785.

The most beautiful
The town was built on the Ikaalinen peninsula on a slope leading to Lake Kyrösjärvi. With its hardwood boulevards and parks and stunning lake views, the town was particularly charming – the Oldest, the Smallest, the Most Beautiful.
