What's in the library?

E-resources

As a PIKI library customer, you have access to a wide range of different e-resousces (e-books, e-audiobooks, digital magazines, films, music). Read more from the PIKI online library.
  

Fiction

There is something to read for every taste and for readers of all ages.

AdultThe latest novels (published within the last two years or so) are easy to find on their own shelf right next to the new releases. The newest fiction and non-fiction books are on display racks next to the service counter. There are also many books in stock and they can be located on the PIKI online library. You can also find reading tips at the same address. In their own genre shelves, adult detective paperbacks, adventure books, fantasy, large-print, horror, sci-fi, war books and non-fiction books are marked with different labels. Folk poetry and poems are available on several meters of shelves.

Young fiction is suitable for children aged 10-12 and up, depending on the reader. There is a separate shelf for young adult literature, suitable for middle school students and older. Young adult literature is also marked with genre labels. From the PIKI online library's youth pages you can find reading tips.

Weigh The department offers thick-leaf reading books and picture books suitable for the youngest readers. There are poems and fairy tales. Easy-to-read fiction is available for those who have just learned to read. You can discuss even difficult topics with children using literature. Nonfiction

There is also non-fiction for adults, young people and children. The non-fiction books are arranged by subject: gardening material on one shelf, cooking recipes on another and Finnish history on the third shelf. The arrangement is Classification system for public libraries (YKL).

When searching for literature, it is worth remembering that material related to a topic is often found on more than one shelf. If you are looking for material on a specific topic, it is worth searching for it in the online library or asking the service desk for help.

Newspapers

The library receives about ten printed newspapers daily, which can be read in the newsroom, see. Newspapers coming to the library (pdf updated 06/2026). Newspapers are stored for about three months. The regional newspaper UutisOiva (and its predecessor Pohjois-Satakunta) is an exception, which is stored permanently. The newest newspapers are on display and older issues can be found in the newspaper room cupboard for about a month, and older ones in storage.

The computers in the readingroom also have access to Pressreader service, which mainly includes foreign magazines and newspapers: the English-language service has over 7,800 magazines in 79 different languages.
  

Magazines

The library subscribes to approximately one hundred issues of printed magazines and hobby magazines for adults, young people and children. See. Magazines coming to the library (pdf updated 06/2026). The latest issue of magazines is displayed on the door of the magazine rack and can be read in the library. Older issues can be found in the rack (or on the non-fiction shelves in the categories according to their subject) and are available for loan. The loan period is two weeks. Depending on the magazine, magazines are kept for 1-5 years, some permanently.

Comics

Comics can be found in the adult, youth, and children's sections.
  

Audio books

Audio CDs include thrillers, entertainment, non-fiction, and poems. The library also has a small collection of Celia audio books (mp3) for people with reading disabilities. See more information about Celia's services.

DVDs

The DVD collection contains material for children, young people and adults. There are films and series suitable for all age groups. There are also karaoke discs and gymnastics guides, for example.

PIKI library customers can use the Cineast service, which provides streaming of films. Log in to the service with your library card number and a four-digit PIN code. More information about the Cineast service in the online library.
  

Music and sheet music

The adult section has a diverse music collection of CDs, from classical to pop, jazz to world music. The library's own collection includes over 1300 sheet music titles, and more can be ordered from PIKI libraries for regional loans.

The children's department also has children's music available for loan in the form of CDs and sheet music.

In addition, PIKI libraries have acquired Naxos music services, which are available online, see instructions for e-materials in the online library.

Medici.tv allows you to browse, search and watch concerts, ballets and operas. Log in to the service at edu.medici.tv. Click the Log in button and select Institution login. Select PIKI Libraries as the institution. Enter your library card number and password.
  

Online courses in playing and singing

Rockway's online courses for playing and singing are available to PIKI customers. Search the online library for "rockway" and you will find over 30 courses at different levels, from beginners to advanced.
  

Ukulele

The library has a ukulele available for loan. The loan period is two weeks and can be renewed if there are no reservations. The instrument can be tuned using an application that can be downloaded to a smartphone, e.g. GuitarTuna.
  

Games

There are traditional board games suitable for adults, children and the whole family.

There are a number of computer games and various console games (PS, Nintendo Switch, XBox, Wii) available, and games can also be ordered for regional loan from other PIKI libraries.
  

Poetry bags

The children's section's poetry bags contain approximately 25 hard plastic cards, each with a children's poem. The bags can be used as an active program with children.
  

Ikaalinen collection

The Ikaalinen Collection contains material about the Ikaalinen region. Non-fiction includes local history, e.g. about buildings and families, fiction includes texts by Ikaalinen authors and texts in which Ikaalinen is the venue. The local history collection also contains newspapers, sheet music and recordings. The local history collection is intended for local use, so no material can be borrowed from it to take home. Genealogy, microfilms and cards

The collections have acquired family and farm history from the area of ​​the old Ikaalinen parish church, as well as material supporting genealogical research. The microrecords contain land and court records, microfilms of church archives – mainly confessional books from the Ikaalinen Cathedral, and general lists of Finnish settlements. Supporters have access to a microrecord reader from which it is possible to print.
  

Sports equipment and games

You can borrow exercise equipment from the city's sports department from the library. The items include water treadmills, kettlebells, walking poles, snowshoes, balance boards, children's exercise equipment bags and board games.
  

Mouse House

Welcome to visit the Mouse House, located in the Ikaalinen Library. Tales from the Mouse House has also been published as a book. With these stories, you can follow the life of a mouse family over the course of a year.

Material selection

Materials are selected for the collections in a diverse manner. The library's basic mission is regulated by the Library Act and Decree, which in turn influences the selection of materials. Other changing factors include demand, supply and scope; what topics the collections already contain information on and how old it is. The library's collection formation has been influenced by the available material allocation.

 

Statistics

Statistics on Finnish public libraries can be found from the statistical database of the Ministry of Education and Culture. There you can also find precise figures on the operations of the Ikaalinen City Library. The statistics show, among other things, the number of acquisitions by material type, total lending and profitability, and the available acquisition budget per inhabitant. And much, much more. The statistical data can also be viewed through visualization.

For example, in 2025, the Ikaalinen City Library had 70,011 volumes in its collections and the number of new acquisitions was 1,963 volumes.
