Special education

At Valkea ruusu school, special education operates flexibly in conjunction with general education. Special education is also implemented in cooperation with small group education.

Through various forms of support, we strive to ensure that every learner receives the support they need for learning and schooling.

Three-tier support

The three levels of learning and school support are general, enhanced and special support. In addition, the student may receive individual student care.

General support is provided immediately to anyone who needs support in their learning. The support can take the form of remedial teaching, differentiated teaching, increased home-school cooperation, part-time special education, etc.

Enhanced support is used when general support is not sufficient.

The need for support is identified by preparing a pedagogical assessment, which is reviewed together with the guardians. The level of support is confirmed in the student support group. A learning plan is made for the student and previous forms of support are enhanced and increased. Support from student support professionals and special education teachers can be increased.

Students for whom the enhanced support forms are not sufficient are entitled to special support. In this case, a pedagogical report is prepared, which defines the need for special support. Special support is provided primarily in the student's own class in accordance with the personal teaching plan (HOJKS) prepared for the student. Support measures can include increasing the support of a school counselor and special education, differentiating teaching and individualizing subjects. Teaching can also be carried out in small groups, either full-time or integrated part-time.

Comprehensive special education

There are two comprehensive special education teachers working at the Ikaalinen Valkea ruusu school. Comprehensive special education is offered at every level of support. A comprehensive special education teacher can, for example, offer simultaneous teaching in classes as a working partner of a class teacher or teach a smaller group in a separate room. In primary education, the work of a comprehensive special education teacher primarily focuses on upper secondary education, i.e. strengthening reading and writing skills.

The comprehensive special education teacher surveys the support needs of students in general education classes and, if necessary, conducts various screening tests for the entire group. The special education teacher works in close cooperation with the class teacher and offers support by consulting and seeking solutions. Depending on the situation and need, the comprehensive special education teacher participates in parent evenings, student meetings and is involved in evaluation.

Coordinating special education teacher

The coordinating special education teacher's job is to ensure that matters related to the municipality's learning support are consistent and up-to-date nationwide.

If necessary, the coordinating special education teacher provides consultation or statements on the student's need for support, assistance in navigating stairs, and the implementation of support measures.

The task also includes coordinating small groups, developing special education, and working with student welfare teams.

Small group teaching

There are four small groups at Valkea ruusu school. The class codes for the small groups start with the abbreviation PRO (small group instruction).

In small groups, the group size is max. 8 students (teaching max. 6 students per activity area). Each group has a special class teacher and, depending on the need for support, 1-5 school attendance counselors. Student groups are formed taking into account the age of the students, their need for support and their integration into general education groups. Small group teaching requires a special support decision.

The idea behind the small groups is inclusive, individualized teaching, so that all children, regardless of their special needs, have the opportunity for meaningful schooling and further studies.

Small group instruction is provided full-time or part-time, integrated into general education.
