Whistle workshop, concert and instrument experiment

The enthusiastically received June whistle workshop will be continued! Instrument builder, trainer and folk musician Minna Hokka will share her skills at an event organized by the Ikaalisten Kalevalaisten Naisten in the Rahkola courtyard on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 4-8 p.m. First, there will be a half-hour concert and instrument presentation for the whole family. Then we will mewl, or try out, Finnish-Karelian and Ingrian shepherd instruments from different eras.

Starting at 16 p.m., the non-stop workshop will be dedicated to making reed and cartpipes. Building a medieval reed/cartpipe requires a bit of concentration, but can be done – as can playing it – by anyone from primary school age. Even kindergarten-aged children can build a 1950s cartpipe, a durable and easy-to-make recycled instrument, with the help of an adult. Playing it is especially fun, and each pipe makes a different sound.

The free workshop is all set up for participants, with pre-prepared materials, tools and supplies. An experienced instructor will help if needed, so you can experience success.
